Uzbekistan is preparing a project for a second nuclear power plant - President

“Extensive preparations” are underway in Uzbekistan for the project of a second nuclear power plant. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced this on August 17 in the Khorezm region at the launch ceremony of new investment projects.

Over the past nine years, $7.5 billion of investments have been attracted to the region, and 9,700 new capacities have been introduced. On this day, the president launched the work of 12 projects worth $176 million and the construction of another 15 facilities worth $7.424 billion. Their implementation should create 6,600 jobs.

Speaking about large energy and infrastructure projects, Shavkat Mirziyoyev mentioned the nuclear power plant under construction in the Jizzakh region.

“In the year of the 35th anniversary of our homeland, you can see for yourself what reforms we are implementing, what projects we are implementing. Could we ever imagine that there would be a nuclear power plant in Jizzakh?” - he said.

Then the president announced the preparation of another nuclear power plant project: “Today I want to tell you a secret: in the near future we are making extensive preparations for the second station.”

The proposed construction location of the second nuclear power plant, its capacity and the timing of the project have not yet been disclosed.

Mirziyoyev linked the implementation of energy projects with the need to provide investors with a stable power supply and clear working conditions.

“Why do investors come here? What`s their first question? "I will bring my investments, but what will the price of electricity be? What guarantees will there be?" Therefore, if we do not implement our strategy until 2030, do not provide guaranteed electricity supply and do not take measures to reduce costs, who will come to us? Nobody ever,” said the head of state.

Let us recall that the technical launch of the first small modular reactor of the future nuclear power plant in the Farish district of the Jizzakh regionplannedfor October-November 2029, the second - six months later. The first large power unit is expected to be launched in 2033, and the project will be fully completed in 2034-2035. Total station powerwill be2110 MW, expected annual output - up to 17 billion kWh.

NPP configurationprovidesfour power units on one site: two with VVER-1000 reactors with a capacity of 1 GW each and two small modular reactors RITM-200N with a capacity of 55 MW each. Base project costis assessedno more than $9.5 billion. The main part of the financingplannedattract in the form of credit funds, including preferential export credits to Russia.

Rosatom will also take over the supply of nuclear fuel, maintenance of the station and management of spent nuclear material. Uzatom emphasized that construction is being carried out taking into account international safety requirements and IAEA missions, and after the implementation of the first project, Uzbekistan intends to continue the development of nuclear energy.
