The share of renewable energy sources in electricity generation in Uzbekistan will reach 18% by the end of 2024 — Minister

The Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan, Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov, spoke about plans to increase the share of renewable energy sources in electricity production at the newly opened Tashkent Energy Week (UEW 2024) on May 14, the correspondent reports "Газеты.uz ".

"We have an ambitious goal that we must achieve by the end of this year — to increase the share of renewable energy sources [from 10%] to 18% [in total electricity production]. And when we talk about renewable energy sources, we consider only solar and wind energy, which by 2030 will account for 40% of our energy balance due to the maintenance of 25 GW of solar and wind power plants," he said.

Due to the commissioning of new capacities in 2023, Uzbekistan reached 18% of solar and wind generation in the daytime last Sunday (May 12), the minister said.

"Of course, the demand was small, but we achieved this indicator. So these 18% are really achievable by the end of the year, because by the end of the year we will put into operation solar plants with 2,000 MW and wind plants with 600 MW. In addition, we will launch energy storage systems for 300 MW by the end of the year," he said.

The next stage of the reforms will involve private investors in the electricity distribution network, as well as doubling energy efficiency.

In addition, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan plans to export "green" energy to Europe, including Hungary and Romania, said Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov.

"We are moving to the next stage of our reforms, including in the energy sector, and these reforms are difficult. But, as our president noted, reforms cannot be implemented alone. We can carry out reforms only with our friends, neighbors, partners, and investors. That's why I would like to welcome all the people who support our reforms, who are involved today and support investments in the energy sector," he stressed.

In 2024, the volume of green energy production in Uzbekistan was planned to increase to 13 billion kWh, and its share in the country's total energy balance to 15%. At a meeting in February, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was dissatisfied with the plans of the Minister of Energy and regional khokims in the field of alternative energy and instructed to accelerate the launch of 14 solar and wind power plants for two to three months, as well as to start projects of two pumped storage stations.
